Marissa Lee Benedict, of Southern Californian origins, currently lives and works in Chicago, IL. She recently graduated with an MFA in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is intrigued by processes which merge dichotomous ideas and substances: where planned human actions encounter uncontrollable biological reactions, and natural and artificial materials amalgamate. She has participated in exhibitions at the LaSalle College of the Arts, Singapore, the Arsenal Center for the Arts, MA and at Columbia College, the Sullivan Galleries, Zhou B Center, Defibrillator and Heaven Gallery in Chicago. She was recently awarded an MFA Fellowship from the Joan Mitchell Foundation and has received a full fellowship to attend a residency at the Vermont Studio Center this December.
In addition to her individual practice, she also maintains a collaborative practice with fellow Southern Californian artist Luis Palacios – their ongoing collaborative endeavors can be found at her website and at www.graftcollaborative.wordpress.com.
