Jeff Austin, born in Hartford, CT, lives and works in Chicago, IL. He is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree at SAIC with concentrations in sculpture, installation and painting. Jeff is participating ACRE residency this summer. Make Space will follow up with him to talk about his time at the residency later this year.
“Ironic but richly aesthetic, Jeff Austin’s subtle juxtapositions of diverse content contend with a culture in crisis while maintaining the language of the shamanistic or mystical. The play with light, the frozen moment and the considered exploration of material seek order, pattern and purpose in the midst of a postmodern condition where all those qualities are illusive or absent. Austin’s work often employs a simple, elegant gesture to bring to light a transcendental quality of the universe at work even in a society in philosophical turmoil. He plainly asks what else, and his undertaking at least announces the hope that there is much, much more.”
