Tamara Santibanez is an artist and tattooer living and working in Brooklyn, New York. Her paintings explore the iconography of subculture and the ways in which seemingly disparate cultures overlap via visual symbolism. Her tattooing draws on this approach, combining elements from traditional American color tattooing, black and grey Chicano style, and the punk and heavy metal visual tradition. Combining her background in fine art printmaking with the practice of tattooing, Tamara utilizes qualities of both the permanence of tattoos as wearable icons and the ephemeral nature of mass-produced print media, such as zines and gig posters. In her most recent work, Tamara renders objects with subcultural associations to explore the ways their meanings are assigned and altered by the viewer.
